Dr. Alton's description and almost the entire table of contents (a few subchapter listings are not here yet):

If a disaster took away the high-technology we take for granted in normal times, would you be prepared to keep you family healthy? Could you be an effective medic when hospitals are overcrowded and the ambulance is heading in the other direction? Can you take over if you were the highest medical asset left? Medical preparedness advocates Joe Alton, MD and Amy Alton, NP’s award-winning Survival Medicine Handbook: A guide for when help is NOT on the way is now out in its greatly expanded and revised 4th edition!

Previous editions have been 1st place winners in the Book Excellence Awards in medicine, and this new edition has many more topics and almost triple the illustrations to give you the best chance of keeping it together, even when everything else falls apart. Called “America’s favorite survival medic” by American Outdoor Guide, NY Times/Amazon bestselling author Dr. Joe Alton and Nurse Practitioner Amy Alton have put together an essential book that encompasses first aid, chronic care, medical procedures, and much more in a comprehensive book that’s an essential reference for anyone concerned about the uncertain future.

The Survival Medicine Handbook is written in plain English that anyone can understand, but it’s not just another medical first aid book. It’s unique in that it assumes that a disaster, natural or man-made, has removed all access to hospitals or doctors for the foreseeable future; you, the average person, are now the highest medical resource left to your family. The book’s goal is to make you effective in that role.

The Survival Medicine Handbook - Fourth Edition

Posted by JD on 3rd Nov 2021

Dr. Joe Alton and wife, ARNP Amy Alton have hit a grand slam with this revised fourth edition. REVIEW - The Survival Medicine Handbook: The Essential Guide for When Help is NOT on the Way (4th Edition), As a former EMT-II who believes in personal preparedness, I was originally trained to treat, stabilize and transport patients to advanced medical care facilities. I have served in a volunteer capacity with Search and Rescue and Emergency Management. I have dozens of medical books in my personal library. What immediately stands out and sets Alton’s newly revised 4th edition of The Survival Medicine Handbook apart from others in this particular field is that, it is intentionally written for medical laymen who may find themselves in a long-term, austere medical setting which is typical to large scale disasters, grid down emergencies and third world countries. In my opinion, this book is a 644 page gold mine of information and everyone should have a copy in their home library. The book opens with a brief dedication and various endorsements from experts in the emergency preparedness field then provides a brief introduction of the authors and their credentials. It then dives into a very thorough, 7 page, 35 section Table of Contents (TOC) that ends with references, a glossary and index and a few blank pages for emergency medical contacts and notes. TOC topics range from Principles of Medical Preparedness to Antibiotics. The text ends with a cute photo of Doctor Bones and Nurse Amy confidently walking hand-in hand away from the camera into an uncertain future. Specifics - I found the printing to be visually crisp and the text very readable. The revised fourth edition was printed in a larger format and the font ia much easier for me to read. The writing was easy to follow and understand. When ‘medical’ terms or phrases are used, they are typically bold texted with definitions provided in the glossary. Although I am not completely done reading through the 4th edition, it seems that a great deal of effort went into proofreading. What I have read thus far is free of typographical errors; something that I particularly appreciate. I chose to spend a few extra dollars and ordered the color edition and am glad I did. The color illustrations and photographs are clear and provide additional understanding to the topic being discussed. The reader should be forewarned that some photographs are of a graphic nature. Although appropriate to the topic, some individuals may find these images a bit unsettling. In closing, I’ve been a supporter of Alton’s mission to put a “medically prepared person in every family” for years. I have every book they’ve written to date including a previous version of The Survival Medicine Handbook. I have ordered medical supplies from their business at DoomandBloom.net and have found them both to be helpful and encouraging to me personally. They are extremely committed to their mission and their content, quality of instruction and products are superb. To put it bluntly, you need to buy this book!

    The NEW Survival Medicine handbook

Posted by Gil Reynolds on 15th Oct 2021

I received my Survival Medicine book the color version this week. I really liked the larger size compared to the two earlier versions we have. The color pictures in this version are well worth the extra cost for us. The table of contents is much easier to use in this version & easier to read. It looks like a lot of work went into this 4th edition to make it a larger size that is easy to read & use. A big improve!
