Dr. Alton's description and almost the entire table of contents (a few subchapter listings are not here yet):

If a disaster took away the high-technology we take for granted in normal times, would you be prepared to keep you family healthy? Could you be an effective medic when hospitals are overcrowded and the ambulance is heading in the other direction? Can you take over if you were the highest medical asset left? Medical preparedness advocates Joe Alton, MD and Amy Alton, NP’s award-winning Survival Medicine Handbook: A guide for when help is NOT on the way is now out in its greatly expanded and revised 4th edition!

Previous editions have been 1st place winners in the Book Excellence Awards in medicine, and this new edition has many more topics and almost triple the illustrations to give you the best chance of keeping it together, even when everything else falls apart. Called “America’s favorite survival medic” by American Outdoor Guide, NY Times/Amazon bestselling author Dr. Joe Alton and Nurse Practitioner Amy Alton have put together an essential book that encompasses first aid, chronic care, medical procedures, and much more in a comprehensive book that’s an essential reference for anyone concerned about the uncertain future.

The Survival Medicine Handbook is written in plain English that anyone can understand, but it’s not just another medical first aid book. It’s unique in that it assumes that a disaster, natural or man-made, has removed all access to hospitals or doctors for the foreseeable future; you, the average person, are now the highest medical resource left to your family. The book’s goal is to make you effective in that role.

When medical personnel are overwhelmed and modern technology is non-existent, The Survival Medicine Handbook is THE essential book for your library.

    Servival medical handbook

Posted by Andrew Kantas on 20th Feb 2024

Excellent reference book, By far the most complete reference on the subject. I opted for the deluxe comb bound edition since it is easy to read, lays flat while turning pages and all color illustrations- highly recommended

    Excellent resource book

Posted by Angela on 28th Nov 2023

I loved this book so much, I bought 7 of them for our adult children. My husband is a physician and I am a Nurse Practitioner. The information is accurate, simple to understand and a "must have" for every family.

    The Survival Medicine Handbook

Posted by Nick Zorn on 27th May 2023

This is a great resource. Fortunately, I’ve only needed to refer to it a few times in the several months I’ve had it but it has been helpful each time. I’m very pleased with the color spiral edition. I really like that it does not have that mass-produced generic feel to it and the little personalized handwritten note was a very nice touch. I highly recommend this valuable handbook.

    survival medicine handbook

Posted by kelly tate on 27th May 2023

Having owned the earliest version of this handbook, I decided to step up and get the spiral bound in color. While not cheap, it is the most comprehensive medical text I've found since nursing school. Well worth the money to be this prepared. Suggest flagging the most crucial (such as the bleeding and major trauma sections) so that in an emergency you aren't frantically trying to find the right page! The lists for what you should have in your medical kit(s) are outstanding!

I have had the book a week and love it. I am working my way through it, about 1/6 completed to date and I am so glad we ordered it. Thanks for all your hard work and effort to produce such a practical and knowledge fill book. The personal note was a nice thought! mark gafford

    Survival book in color

Posted by Armando Moncada on 5th May 2023

I haven’t read all of it yet, but after looking at the table of contents and reading the first few chapters, I can tell it is very well organized. It even has me considering taking a course in basic emergency medical procedures.

    Excellent Book

Posted by Greg Brown on 17th Apr 2023

I recommend the color version. I probably should have gotten the spiral version (color) for ease of use. Well worth the money for this excellent, updated book. Dr. Alton and Nurse Amy's book is a must have for anyone interested in off-grid/survival medicine, or just medicine in general. Their book on antibiotics and infectious disease is another well worth having. Watch their YouTube channel, also excellent information there.
